The Visual Regression test will fail if the differences between the two pages are higher than a set threshold (“tolerance” can be set from 0% to 90%).

Frequently asked questions

How does the comparison work?

You give it two addresses, typically staging and production. It screenshots each from the cloud, compares them pixel by pixel and shows a third image next to the result with the differences picked out in red.

Will small rendering differences fail every run?

Only if you want them to. Each test carries a tolerance you can set anywhere from 0% to 90%, so anti-aliasing and sub-pixel shifts can pass while a real layout break fails.

Can I run a comparison without leaving the browser?

Yes. The Chrome extension runs your defined tests and returns the same pixel-by-pixel comparison in seconds, which is the quickest way to check the change you are looking at.

What should I compare against?

Staging against production is the most useful pairing, because the difference between them is your change. Point both at the same path so the comparison is like for like, rather than two pages that were never the same.

What about pages that change on every load?

A carousel, a timestamp or rotating content registers as a difference every time. Raise the tolerance for those pages, or point the test at an address where the changing block is not present.
