Do I need technical knowledge to set this up?

You need a URL. Adding a check is entering the address and choosing how often to test it.

Will I get emailed for every small hiccup?

Not if you set retries, which make a check fail more than once before it alerts. That filters out the brief network blips that are not really outages.

What happens when my SSL certificate is about to expire?

SSL monitoring alerts you ahead of the expiry date, which is the whole point: an expired certificate is an outage you could have prevented with a calendar reminder nobody set.
