How do I simulate everyone joining at once?

Use a short ramp-up so virtual users arrive in a burst rather than gradually. That is what makes it a spike test rather than a load test.

How many virtual users should I test with?

Above your registration count, not at it. Attendance is unpredictable and the point of the exercise is headroom.

When should the test happen?

Far enough ahead that a bad result can still be acted on. A test that finds a problem on the morning of the event has found it too late to help.

Can I test a page that needs a login?

Yes. Multistep checks chain requests and carry data forward, so an authenticated journey can be exercised end to end.
