List of IP ranges to be whitelisted

Whitelist the following IP ranges to ensure that the load generators can reach your application successfully. LoadFocus uses AWS which requires for a wide range of IPs to be whitelisted in order to use them as load generators.

Why do I need to whitelist the LoadFocus IPs?

  • LoadFocus spins up cloud instances on the fly to run your load or JMeter test, because of this we won’t know the IP addresses ahead of time.

  • The approach is preferred in load testing and by our customers since it’s best to simulate load from many different locations at once as it gives us a more realistic test.

  • Also this allows the load balancers as well to be exercised (load balancers use what is called round robin IP-based load balancing).

When is mandatory to whitelist the LoadFocus IPs?

  • Case 1: When testing an application that is deployed behind a firewall, you will need to whitelist the LoadFocus IP addresses to allow the traffic to reach the application.

  • Case 2: When the application is behind some load balancers and web application firewalls (including Cloudflare, Nginx, HAProxy) that have a DDoS protection feature that watches for a large flood of traffic from the same IP address, and blocks or throttles subsequent traffic from it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does anything need whitelisting?

LoadFocus starts cloud machines on demand to generate your load, so the addresses are not known before the run begins. Allowing the published ranges is what lets that traffic reach you instead of being dropped at the edge.

When is it actually mandatory?

Two cases. When your application sits behind a firewall that blocks unknown sources, and when a load balancer or WAF throttles a sudden flood from addresses it does not recognise. Cloudflare, Nginx and HAProxy can all be set up to do that, and managed WAFs often arrive with it switched on.

Where do I get the current list?

The LoadFocus ranges are listed on this page. The JSON link beside them is AWS's own published range file, which covers every AWS service and region, so treat it as the upstream source rather than something to paste into a rule unfiltered.

Do the ranges change?

They follow the underlying AWS ranges, which do change over time. Re-check this page if a test that used to pass starts being blocked, rather than trusting a list copied months ago to still be complete.

My test only fails under load. Is that a whitelist problem?

It can be. Rate limiting and DDoS protection often let early requests through and begin rejecting once the rate climbs, which looks exactly like an application failing at a threshold. Check whether the rejections come from your edge before tuning anything behind it.
