What is a UUID?

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, for example 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000. Version 4 UUIDs are generated from random data, so they are practically guaranteed to be unique without a central authority. They are used as database keys, request IDs, and file names.
