What does the validator check?

It parses your .jmx test plan and reports syntax errors, missing or broken elements, and configuration that would make the run behave unexpectedly. You find out before spending a test run discovering it.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

The validator is free and needs no signup. Upload a .jmx file and the findings come back in the browser. An account is needed only to run the validated plan as a real cloud load test, and the free plan is enough to start.

Should I remove credentials before uploading?

Yes, and not only here. Replace passwords and tokens in a test plan with variables so the file can be checked into source control safely. A plan that carries live credentials is a problem wherever it is stored.

Which JMeter versions does it understand?

The validator reads standard .jmx test plans. When it meets an element it cannot resolve it names that element rather than failing vaguely, so you can see exactly what needs updating.

My script validates but the test still fails. Why?

Validation covers the plan, not your application's answer to it. A well-formed plan still fails if the target rejects the traffic or a login step does not correlate. JMeter already treats any response of 400 or above as a failure on its own, but a 200 carrying an error body counts as a pass, so add an assertion for the responses that matter.
