Is the SSL checker free to use?

Yes, and it needs no account. Enter any public HTTPS address and the result comes back in the browser. There is a short wait between free checks, and the page shows how long is left. Continuous certificate monitoring is on every plan, including the free one.

What does the checker look at?

It reads the certificate your site actually serves and reports whether it is currently valid, the dates it runs from and until, and how many days are left before it expires. If the certificate cannot be read at all you get the error, rather than a silent pass.

How far ahead will I be warned before a certificate expires?

Certificate monitoring alerts you 14, 7 and 3 days before expiry, which leaves room to renew before anything breaks. The one-off check on this page reports the days remaining but does not watch the certificate over time.

Can I check a certificate on an internal address?

No. The check runs from our cloud, so the hostname has to resolve publicly. Private addresses and internal-only hostnames are turned away by the URL check before anything is fetched.

Does an expired certificate affect my search traffic?

Browsers put a full-page warning in front of the site, so visitors leave before anything renders. It is one of the most common ways a working site goes dark, and an alert two weeks ahead prevents all of it.
